Mary asks…
Help! All of my computer settings seemed to reset?!?
You’ll have to let me explain to you what happened if you want to figure out my computer mystery. But first let me say: I am NOT interested in hearing about what comptuer/OS/Program(s) I should have. If you don’t know what’s wrong or how to fix it, then don’t post an answer. I am not interested in changing my OS, and I shouldn’t have to.
About 2 days ago I turned on my computer. It was all normal. I put in my password and away I went. It said “loading desktop…” It took much longer than usual, almost 10 minutes as opposed to instantly. I thought it was probably just from an automatic update, although I did not remember any such updates last time I was on my computer.
When it finally loaded, everything on my computer was different. All my files were there and everything worked fine… But everything was DEFAULT. As if all the settings were reset. Not that much of a problem… But I can’t change some of them – or at least can’t figure out how to.
My icons, normally the “Classic” small size were back to the bigger size, and reorganized.
My color scheme was back to that vista transperant blue.
All of my programs, upon starting them, acted as though it was the first time I was starting them. And all of their settings were at default: most easily noticed in Windows Live Messenger.
All of that is okay, I fixed that all… But there are some things I cannot manage to fix…
My favorites were alphabetized. I move them back to the way I want, and they automatically alphebitze again! I can’t organize my favorites!
Added in my favorites are the folders “Favorites Bar” and “Windows Live.” I delete these useless folders, and the automatically return.
When I right click on the desk top and go to NEW to start a new folder or text document or bitmat image… Nothing is there. Under New it just says “empty.”
My Recycle bin never appears full, even with items in it.
It always has the option to be emptied, even without items in it.
It always asks if I’m sure I want to delete “all items” when I choose to empty it, even when there are no item in it.
Under my start menu, the program’s list is empty. No recently used programs or frequently used programs are listed, when they usually are.
Internet Explorer takes noticibly longer to load, when it use to be instant.
Windows Movie Maker takes noticibly longer to load, when it use to be instant.
My computer cannot open, run, or burn any CDs in anyway, shape, or form. It always says that the disk are not formatted for windows, and gives me no option to format them.
The same is true with all flash drives.
That’s it for the problems. Now for some information to help you solve the mystery.
All I use my internet for is checking my email, which is only for checking texts from my g/f and yahoo! answers. Also using Windows Live Messenger, and World of Warcraft. I don’t download from shady sites or anything.
I have Malwarbyte’s Anitmalware, which tells me my computer has no virus of any type. Malwarbyte’s is updated. If you know the program, you know it’s good.
I recall no automatic update the last time I turned off my computer when it was working properly.
My computer is an ASUS Laptop, with Windows Vista Service Pack 2. It has been fully updated with all automatic updates. It is x86. It has 4.00 GB RAM, duel core, et cetera… It has tons of free space left.
What’s going on?
Thank you.

Michael asks…
What is a good safe site to download from?
I was a member of Area Ultra for over 2 years, then today it was no longer available with messages saying it was not safe..due to adware & spyware compromises. The icon that I had on my desk top doesn’t even work anymore. I paid a one time fee over 2 years ago….anyway it has been changed or no longer available that’s what the message keeps on saying if I even try. Does anyone no of a good site that I can download movies & music from for free. It’s disappointing I had a really good collection of movies & music now they’re all gone. It’s so hard to trust a site & understand what is a scam & what’s not. Any advice on what’s out there? It would be appreciated.

Help me create Multiple Graboid trial accounts?
I’ve been trying to find a great place to download movies for free and many have given me some sites to go on but there’s always a hidden catch, anyway i came across Graboid and it looked great. Watched a few movies and the quality was amazing. I knew i was only limited to a 2000mb download limit but i got addicted to it, so i wanted to watch more movies. So i thought i could simply remove the program, re-download it and sign-up again for another trial and get the 2000mb. Nope…didn’t work, turns out that programme remembers the IP address of your computer and therefore you can’t re-sign up for another trial account.
There must be some way round this, how can i create another free trial account? People out there with top notch computer skills must know, so please help me out. (I’ve watched about 15videos on the net trying to help me but it seems those videos all relate to an older version of Graboid)

Sable answers:
Ollriitii then, Sweet heart,
1. When you install Graboid, it takes you to a registration page…bookmark, or make a desktop shortcut to the page. Currently it is:
http://www.graboid.com/subs/signupApp.php?price_group=-21
…but it may not stay that way.
2. Make sure you have a few email addresses handy so that you can create multiple accounts.
3. After you make an account, graboid can tell and will not let you create another, because it can tell by your IP and server info that it’s still you…here is where it gets a little tricky…you need to change your IP by using a proxy.
4. Go to:
http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/
5. Find a working proxy by clicking on one in the well known public proxy list…next click on the proxy address, then click on the address under statistics for…if it comes up ping OK then it is a working proxy.
6. Next take note of the address (or you can copy, paste it), and the port number.
7. I am assuming using Internet Explorer 7.0 (although I don’t). In IE go to Tools, Then Internet Options.
8. Next Go to Connections Tab, then LAN settings button.
9. Under proxy server click: Use a proxy server for your LAN.
10. Put in the address (IP)and port from step 5&6.
11. Exit and restart IE…if you get an error either the proxy is a bad one…or your firewall blocked it…try redoing steps 4 through 10.
12. If all went well go to your bookmark, or shortcut for registration, or copy the link from step 1.
13. Create your account.
14. Note you need to do an new proxy for each account. Some people have suggested that rebooting your router will do the same thing, but that doesn’t always work.
15. Alternative method is create a new user account in windows and install graboid there…when your done delete the account, and then create another new one. This does work…however, my method above lets you create as many accounts as you have email addy’s, and put less wear and tear on windows.
Hope it Helps

Why would a yahoo answer account get suspended ?
on my other account, i answered a question about someone wanting software to transfer data from their ipod back to their computer. it took me about 2 minutes and i discovered a software and posted the link. they sent me an email saying i was in violation of their terms. i’m suspecting that someone saw my answer and reported it. i explained to them the situation and they said we’re sorry about that and acknowledged that i wasn’t in violation of their guidelines.
so a couple days ago, i get a notice about an account suspension because someone asked a question about being able to download movies from a site. my reply was, “no there’s not, however i know a site that’s free where you can watch them”. then i posted the link. i have no affiliation with the site what so ever, period.
i seen a top contributor on here, i’ve seen his answers on many of the same questions that i’ve answered. he asked a question about posting links in his answers too. apparently he got an email about how he had violated the terms too for posting a link. my question is this, why do they have a source spot on the bottom of the answer part if you can’t name your sources ?
i’ve felt like i have purpose again by simply answering common computer questions based on events that i’ve went through too. some of these questions are of situations that i’ve been there too. based on softwares that i’ve tried that have helped me, i suggest them to others too. thats’ the whole point is to answer and help others. before college, i knew nothing of freeware that could help you in your computer troubles. so i simply suggest them to others. i’m not doing any self promotion or promotion for the software. i’m not making any money off it, besides they’re free. i’m just spreading the good word based on what i know and what has helped me.
i have contested the suspension. so far, no email has been sent back to me in response. you know what’ s amazing, i’ve actually been rated a top answer about 10 maybe times this week. that’s suprised me a whole lot too. so people are liking my answers to their questions. i don’t see the problem with giving a link that will help the solution to their problem with a freeware.

Sable answers:
I gotta agree here. Was at number 1 in comp and internet for a couple years. Got booted. It seems the answers team insists on catering to askers and has never considered the fact that some contributors give their time to help others save big money answering their tech questions but the minute a questioner even thinks hes been violated, the answerer gets a notice. I’ve even been to the point that the answers team argues with each other as to whats a violation and what isnt. I givem the truth. You will find however that sometimes peep dont want to hear it. MANY top contributors, peep who know their stuff are no longer here and thats a shame. Funny, I am retired now and still have a shop and do pc work. Peep are a strange sort. They come into my shop, pay good money and listen intently to what I tell them. They faithfully come back time after time. Never argue. They get in here and get free tech help and you get slapped in the face. As long as I can help save some of them money tho, I keep coming back.

What do you think?
i have this H.W talking about internet and i have to read it infornt of the class
what do you think i should add/replace/delete ?
Internet
Internet has been for sure the most outstanding invention in the history of mankind. And today it has become the most ever powerful tool for man throughout the world.
Internet has brought a globe in a single room, right from news across the corner of the world, Wealth, knowledge, shopping and purchasing an airplane ticket, ticket to a movie or maybe to your favorite football club. Everything is at your fingertips. However, like most, Internet has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Communication of course is one of the best features you can get from the internet. You can talk and even see your far away loved ones in a fraction of seconds, chat for hours, e-mail services are provided by many companies for free, such as Hotmail, Yahoo mail, Gmail and others. Still; innovations are going on to make it faster and more reliable.
Information is perhaps the biggest advantage internet have to offer. Search engines like Yahoo! and Google are at your service. There is a huge amount of information available for just about every subject known to man.
Students are among the top users of the internet, it’s almost required that students should use the internet for research for the purpose of gathering resources.
Entertainment is another popular reason of why too many people spend lots of time surfing the internet, and that’s all because you can download games, pictures and music, watch videos, celebrity gossip, meet new interesting friends, follow sport events and find new interests and hobbies.
People like getting some services done for them by the internet because is much easier, faster and it cost less than having them done offline, services like online banking, job seeking, purchasing tickets, hotel reservations and also teaching programs.
Commercials are almost in every page you surf in the internet, which helps business deals, fashion and electronics and other companies.
Online shopping websites like e-bay and Amazon are well known by people, they sell everything clothes, shoes, phones, cars and even pets, you name it.
People may face problems like theft of personal information if they use the internet such as name, address and credit card numbers etc.
Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails in bulk.
A computer virus is a program that copies itself and infects a computer without permission or knowledge of the user. viruses may take advantage of network services such as the World Wild Web, e-mail, Instant Messaging and File sharing systems to spread.
Some viruses are programmed to damage the computer by damaging programs, deleting files, or reformatting the hard disk. Others are not designed to do any damage, but simply replicate themselves and perhaps make their presence known by presenting text, video, or audio messages. They can result in system crashes or slowing down of the computer and it’s also very difficult to find and stop the problem.
Pornography is perhaps the biggest problem exists in the internet; there are lots of pornographic sites on the internet that can be easily found.
Internet can also be time wasting for students who need to focus on their studies.
Anyways you can see that the advantages of the internet outweigh its disadvantages.

Sable answers:
Alot of people including me will not read it all because it is to long but at the begining I noticed that you should take this part out. ( has been for sure the most outstanding invention in the history of mankind. And today it ) It is an outstanding invention but it is not the most outstanding in the history of mankind.

Laura asks…
What is Mininova’s market share?
I’ve seen the figures for Mininova downloads for 2007 – I was wondering what this meant in terms of the whole internet.
http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-pirated-movies-and-tv-shows-2007-080101/
TV-shows are by far the most popular files on BitTorrent sites. On Mininova alone, some episodes are downloaded more than 2 million times. Movies are a good second, with over 500.000 downloads for the most popular titles.
The popularity of movies and TV-shows hasn’t gone unnoticed, with some TV-studios allegedly use BitTorrent as a marketing tool, and others leaking unaired pilots intentionally. Independent filmmakers also benefit from spreading their files on BitTorrent. It is completely free and enables them to reach a huge audience.
